Annual Athens Fair Opens; Local Pacer To Go TodayAthens, September 17, 1918—Because of a change of the management of the Athens Fair Association the racing program will start at the fair grounds this afternoon at 2 o’clock, and Leon McKinney, owned by Myer brothers of this city, will figure this afternoon in the 2:17 pace. McKinney was scheduled to go Wednesday afternoon in this event but Robert Myer, one of the owners, was advised last night that the horses would start this afternoon. The local horse is a favorite over other entrants in the race this afternoon and is expected to add another victory to the quartet already scored in the past four weeks. The fair grounds were thrown open yesterday morning on the tenth annual exhibition and several hundred were on the grounds for the opening day. The Ingersoll-Rand band gave concerts yesterday afternoon and evening and will be on hand at the afternoon and evening performance during the remainder of the weekThe exhibits in the main building and in the booths under the grandstand are good. One of particular interest is that which the Ingersoll-Rand company has arranged, displaying the products of Athens’ big manufacturing concern. The race card is well filled, there being as large a number of horses as in past years. The track, the best half mile in the state, is in excellent condition this year and tomorrow when the speeders line up for their first scoring, some track records may be expected to fall. The cattle exhibit is well filled, many of the entries being made yesterday afternoon. The fair association has spared no expense this year to give the people the best fair they ever enjoyed While the nation is caught in the clutches of war and every person doing his or her utmost to bring it to a successful conclusion, the fair offers everything that the people can desire at a nominal sum. A spectacular program has been arranged for the evening events.
