Bicentennial Opening Set For Abe Lincoln’s LibraryHARROGATE, TENN. — The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum is rapidly becoming mure of a reality and less of a dream to its supporters. The proposed building, which will cover 20,000 square (cot of the Lincoln Memorial University campus, will house the $3 million LMU collection of Lincoln letters, artifacts, and memorabilia.The museum will display exhibits rclat* ' ing tn the 16th President, while the building will also contain a gift shop, auditorium, and library. Dr. Frank Welch. LMU President, recently stated that the objective of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, is to provide people with the atmosphere and feeling which would enable them to experience the spirit of Abraham Lincoln. The museum will reflect Lincoln's concern for the people of the Appalachian area and LMU's commitment to the heritage of Lincoln's concern.The museum project was launched when Colonel and Mrs. Harland 1). Sanders of Kentucky made a matching fund gift of $500,000 toward establishment of the facility. Another $100,000 has been added by the Lincoln Memorial Board of Trustees. Welch has promised that Colonel Sanders' gift will be mulched be Dec. 3t of this year, An additional Si million is needed to complete the required $2 million canitul out lav.Cecil H. Butcher of Knoxville, has been named general chairman of the campaign formed to raise the additional funds required to build and operate themuseum.The local campaign will be headed by Ray Neely of Giles Industries in Middles-boro. Ky.No presidential library has ever been erected for Abraham Lincoln. The proposed librarv-muscum will serve basically as a museum showing Lincoln Memorial as part of the Lincoln tradition. The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum will be distinctly different from other presidential libraries in that it will seek an affcctual and inspiring response from the general public ralhor than only from oriented scholars. The now facility will enable Lincoln Memorial University to gain visibility and reputation for the future, which is critical for preserving and improving the college’s educational p mgr a ms, college leaders say.Abraham Lincoln expressed the hope that a place of higher education be founded in the area where Lincoln Memorial now stands. LMU was founded in 1897.Welch said ground will be broken for the building in 1075, and the Lincoln Library and Museum should be open to the public sometime during 1076, when the country celehraies its bicentennial.
