CLEVERA holiday bill of pleasing qualityand consistent merit opened at the Orpheum yesterday with Christmas matinee. The headliner this week is the sketch “Cherie.” with Mr. Clayton and Miss Marie Stuart, presenting unlimited opportunity for the principals in the way of wholesome comedy. In the character of a large, salubrious, racy individual, White is inimitable and Miss Stuart in a whole sou ledspinster role—somewhat unusual— presents a characterization which is very humorous.A strong situation develops in the playlet, “The Visitor,” which deals with a murder trial, the attorney for the defense trapping the prosecuting attorney into an interview’ and obtaining the necessary evidence from the prosecuting attorney himself to free the murderer.Charles M. McDonald, assisted by the Misses Crawford and Montrose. offer an Irish song and dance skit that is clever and an excellent bit of quartet singing is done by Messrs. Storm, Heals, Billbury and Moon.Hugh Lloyd is so perfectly at home on the slack rope that he nimbly turns somersaults, alighting on his feet on the rope, while playing a violin. He also does the same stunts while blindfolded.Arthur Borani and his very intelligent little dog furnishes the audience with seme very clever stunts by the dog as well as Mr. Borani.tiful. the “Garden of Roses” and “Voices of the Wood,” Rubenstein’s Melody in F being encored and encored. The most novel was the circular saws, played while moving rapidly, the house being darkened and the stage illumined by the sparks flying from the saws.Blake’s Animal circus, consistingof some pretty Shetland ponies, several monkeys and Hee Haw Maud, delighted everyone. Themule is a great bucker, and Mr. Blake gives three boys a chance at every performance to ride her. If they succeed in doing so. he rewards them with one dollar. One hoy earned the dollar.One of the neatest, most appreciated singing skits of the year is that offered by the Swickards. entitled “The Shoplifters,” in which they do some good singing. The headliners, Willard’s temple of Music, is one of the most beautiful and novel acts of the holiday season.
