It’s really cold outside, inside I mean, especially when there’s nothing to back up to like a fireplace or a stove. But, that’s alright because I do enjoy the central heat system most of the time. The cold isn’t so bad but I can recall a really cold Christmas. What am I talking about here, all the Christmases were cold during those childhood days. When the third norther blew in the cold remained until the thawing took place in the springtime. Those days were the coldest ever and especially during the heading for the barn to do the milking. We’d need to wear several layers of clothing and any coats available. Our Dad would never allow our staying the entire milking timebecause of his concern for his daughters. Either he would announce he could finish the job, or, at least tell his milkmaids that they could head for the house and warm up. Standing by that good hot fire in the red hot wood stove was heaven to us. When I say red hot that’s what I mean as the sides of the stove would be like something transparent as we could see the warmth heading our way.Something else we did on those very cold days and by the stove was roll up a piece of paper and light it up on one end and try sucking the heated paper. Myyyyy starrrrs! Our Mom must not have known about that trick because she was always in t’.. , kitchen standing over the hot stove. It’s a miracle that one of us girls didn’t suck some of that fire down our throats as we puffed quickly on the burning paper. Reminds me that either Boob or I would beg our Dad to allow us to light his cigarette and I can still hear him today saying these words, “Kids, this is the awfullest habit you could ever get into, don’t ever start it.” (He did quit smoking after the doctor told him he had to do so or else. And he did manage to live until he was 84 years old.)But, at Christmas time we always had a three act play for the program at school. I loved being in the plays especially the practice time because we could use our time in other parts of the building. Or, if the sun wasBy Dorothy Taylorshining we could get outside if the wind wasn’t blowing a gale. 01’ Santa always came to the school building and the tree would be as large as possible. We always had a glorious time even though it was a cold time. So, all you great folks out there in reader land have a good one and especially tell those wonderful children around your place that you love them dearly ad always will. That’ll make their holidays all worthwhile. And, stay warm!Jambs 2:16 “And one of you say unto them, depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?”
