6 round ManningFriends and relatives of Nick Proskurniak sprang a surprise party at his lipme on Sunday, December 19. Gifts were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Proskurniak consisting of an ash tray and aluminum ware.After spending four months in Manning, Mr. and Mrs. Han-nigar left for their home in Sexsmith on Sunday. Mr. Han-nigar worked on the water and sewagd project.Bobby Brown had 15 young guests to his eighth birthday party on Wednesday, December 15. The kids all had fun ingames.Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Brown are expecting their son and his family from Sexsmith to spend Christmas with them.Dr. and Mrs. E. W. pissell are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Kayfor Christmas dinner.*The New Year's Eve dance in the Aurora Hall is to be sponsored by the Battle River Branch of the Canadian Legion. This year it is hoped to include novelties and spot dances as well as giving the usual novelty items.The bridge crews are again at work after only a short layoff. Work was started on the Hotchkiss bridge by Lahey Construction on Monday. The same firm is also doing the carpentry wprk on the Manning bridge and the new municipal hospital. Apart from stucco work exterior work on the hospital is now about complete.Local curling enthusiasts are wondering just when they will have ice to curl on. The weather of the last week has spoiled any hopes they may have had of starting the sport before Christmas, Luckily Gunder Lien hadn't started to paint the “houses before the mild weather came. He reports that the ice at the west end of the rink has-melted but-elsewhere -there-is still ice. So there's still hope before Easter.Christmas means long journeys for some of the membersof the Manning teaching staff.Mrs. George is to spend the holidays with her sister in Calgary while Miss Beggs joins her parents at Weyburn, Sask. Mr Piwowar is going to his home in Smoky Lake. The longest trip of all will be made by Miss McCaw whose parents have moved to Idaho since she came to Manning.A van drivers' meeting was held in Manning on Friday night when drivers re-elected the same executive as last year,namely: President, W. Ryan;vice - president, J. Caverley; secertary, S. Lien.Among the decisions made at the meeting was a winter workshop for drivers on maintenance of school vans with special emphasis on running repairs which may be necessary at temperatures at which vans sometimes have to operate.The 4-H Clothing Club held their last meeting at the home of Dorothy Lambert with 11 members answering the roll call with a grooming hint. Miss Mitchell, District Economist, Mrs. A. Eggenberger and Mrs. P. Dechant, Club Leaders, were also present.t Miss Mitchell told the group • how to make hand bags which can go with anything during the summer. Later during the evening the girls answered a quizz on the conduct of a meeting. Miss Mitchell will be guest speaker at the next meeting. She will address the club on -Good Grooming.The next meeting will be held at the home of Cecelia Dechant on Thursday, January 6.No official ceremonies will mark the turning on of water in Manning which will probably take place on Thursday. Lines in the north of town have already passed tests and at the present time lines in the southern part of town are undergoing tests to discover leakages.
