The pa’quette and balcony were crowded to excese. and the upper tier was not filled only because the passages to it were glutted with peop'e Nine hundred scholars of the High and Intermediate Schools were seated in the I auaierae to assist ia the musical part of the irasguraiion ceremonies. Of the general an- I dience. a large proportion were ladies, who 1 aT=o filled the prcscenium boxes, and evinced 1 the same intense interest in the erercisea as they have shown in maturing the countless details of this monster charitable enterprise, 1 if we may call it by so hard a name. IShortly after eleven o’clock the stage w»v occupied by a number of the Executives of the Fair, General Boaecrans, Bishop Mcllvaiae, General Samuel F. Cary, Rev. S. S. Fisher and . others, among them a number of the first-named General s staff. A prolonged round of applause greeted theth, which was renewed waen General Rosecrana advanced to the footlights and made the opening remarks. The speeches were commendubly brief, and were altogether appropriate for the occasion.General Rotecrans advanced and said;Mv Fillow citizws— I have the hoaor toannounce the opening of the Great Western Sanitary FA:, and can heartily congratulate you cu the auspicious prospect before us. In the course of the exercises you tfiil be addressed by those more eloquent than myself,so I shall ?ueak only for the Executives of the j Fair, and for the soldiers. [Applause.] I think the former should always be gratefully remembered by all who love our soldiers and their gallant 'mission; and that our braves 1 wiii no; forget them I need hardly assure you. In behalf of the soldiers tlremseltes, I am j happy to say that nothing I have eeen since the beginning of the war i3 calculated to so rerve and inspirit them as the intense enthusiasm and ihe untiring liberality which the I people ha-^e shown in this great and noble work [Applause.] There i3 not. one of the brave lads .n the field but who will be electrified by this signal and practical manifestation of cur unwavering devotion to the cause for which he fights, and the affection for him and the Eonor for his achievements, wtkich are
