Met soloists to sing at seminary concertTwo Metropolitan Opera singers will be soloists with the festival chorus and symphonic orchestra in a presentation of Elgar's oratorio, “The Dream of Gerontius, to be performed Sunday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. in Cincinnati Music Hall.They are Seth McCoy, tenor, and Hilda Harris, mezzo soprano. Thomas Sherwood, bass baritone of Cincinnati, also will be a soloist.The event will be part of the Cincinnati archdiocese’s celebration of 150 years of seminary education.Dr. James Moore, music director of Mt. St. Mary seminary,will be the conductor. Thechorus will include choir members of various Greater Cincinnati parishes and communities and the Men's Glee Club of the University of Cincinnati, which is directed by Dr. John Lehman.Father Giles H, Pater, archdiocesan worship consultant, is chairman of the committee planning the presentation. He pointed out that Elgar’s composition is based on a poem by John Henry Cardinal Newman and that it was performed 25 years ago in Cincinnati as part of the May Festival program.There seems to be a renewedinterest' in this majestic oratorio,'' Father Pater commented. Recently it was presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Amajor production was held thisyear in London and one is scheduled in Canada. We see our production as a cultural contribution to the life of the Cincinnati community by the seminary of the archdiocese.In announcing the performance, Archbishop Joseph L. Bernardin said: We are pleasedto schedule Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius' as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of (the seminaries') establishment.
