Nursery seedlings top entriesWATERSMEET — Foresters' 1983 Notional All 11 Tourney nurserySeedlings from the J.W. Tree Seedling Exhibit and entries earned awards. The ..white spruce, black spruce, eastern hemlock, northernTourney Nursery, Ottawa National Forest, captured seven firet-plocc awards in the Society of AmericanCompetition held in con-junction with the national SAP convention in Portland, Ore.white cedar, yellow birch, eastern white pine andnorthern red oak seedlings too^ftrst place honors. The red pine, jack pine, and white apple merited second place awards and the paper birch took a third.The award-winning trees were among hundreds of entries from federal, state and private nurseries across the country.Tourney Nursery Superintendent Paul Forward said careful preparation was required before the seedlings left Tourney Nursery for the competition. Since Tourney supplies the National Forests in the Lake States primarily with bare root” planting slock, bare root seedling were selected for entry.The soil was carefully washed from their roots, which were then packaged with moist packing medium. The seedlings were then boxed and shipped airmail to Portland. All this had to take place just the week before the competition to ensure that the seedlings arrived fresh and in good condition.The effort paid off for Forward and his crew. They now have almost a dozen ribbons to hang in the place of honor at their office.J.W.
