Film: hello Dolly time in ‘9 To 5’By Vern PerryRegister staff writert doesn't take much to see how “9 To 5 could have been a total disaster as a motion picture.In this age of women fighting for their rights as workers, any film about three secretaries seeking revenge on their tyrannical boss could have fallen into the obvious trap of taking itself too seriously. Thankfully, director Colin Higgins — working from a screenplay he co-authored with Patricia Resnick from her story idea — saw the trap.Instead of making *’9 To 5” into a film that focuses on all women, Higgins had the sense to stick to the story at hand. The result is an amusing and occasionally hilarious film that moves quickly and logically from point A to point B.9 To 5 also benefits from fine performances by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Doily Parton, in her motion picture acting debut, as the three secretaries. Admittedly, the characters they portray are stereotypes but in the hands of Fonda. Tomlin and Parton they come across more as real people than cliches.The film opens when recently-separated Judy Bernly (Fonda) goes to work as a secretary for a large company. She is befriended by Violet Newstead (Tomlin), a secretary passed over for promotion so many times she can’t remember them all.Judy quickly discovers her new boss, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman) for the tyrant he is After he berates her when an office machine malfunctions and takes credit for one of Violet’s innovative ideas, the two secretaries head for the nearest bar to drown their sorrows.
