Speaks resigned from the Board of Directors of the Maryland-Yirgmia Milk Producers Association and Alien M. Finer retired from the County Committee of the Production and Marketing Administration. The resignation of Mr. Speaks was caused by the fact that he is discontinuing farming in the Spring. He had served on the Mary land-Virgtma board for nearly 20 years. His tenure of office saw the association grow from a small beginning to a position among the top milk marketing cooperatives in the nation. The high regard m which be was held was most adequately expressed by Manager B. B. Derrick and President J. Homer Rems berg at the annual membership meeting on December 12 when Mr. Speaks presented his resignation. No man in Frederick county has done more to further the cooperative movement. He served Frederick county milk producers conscientiously and wisely. Allen J.1. Pitzer has served as a member ofthe county PMA Committee for 14 years. In this position he came in contact with practically every farmer in Frederick county His persona! popularity and the manner in which he conducted the affairs of the county committee are evidenced by the fact thai he served for so many years in this important position.It is interesting to note that 7 of 10 highest herds in buiterfat production in October in MarylandD. H. I. A. Associations were from Frederick county. This is an indication of the high level of production maintained on Frederick county dairy farms and speaks well for the excellent management of the Frederick county dairymen.Dairy cows normally will drink water about ten times a day. Those witn free access to water will use about 18 per cent more than those 'watered twice a day and they will produce 31^ per cent more milk on the average. These figures are cited by J. W. Pou, Extension Dairyman, University of Maryland. He adds that dairy cows require approximately 5 pounds of water for every pound of milk. Because of the increased production, states Mr. Pou. drinking cups or an inside water tank will pay dividends on most dairy farms. He suggests that this is a good time of year to get the job done.Important Meetings ScheduledSeveral important annual meeting which will be of interest to Frederick county farmers are scheduled in January. The first of these is the annual meeting of the State Horticultural Society to be held in Hagerstown on January 4 and 5. This meeting will be followed by the annual meeting of the State Poultry Council in Baltimore on January 6. In connection with the Poultry Council meeting the 19th annual Maryland Poultry Products Show will be held in the Eord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore on January 5-9. The annual meeting of the Maryland Farm Bureau will also be held at the Lord Baltimore Hotel January 7-10. This meeting, and meetings of the many affiliated groups which are held at the same time, always attracts a large number of Frederick county farm people. Plans are being made this year to provide a program which will include practically all members of the farm family.Entry blanks for the 1950 Maryland Efficient Dairy Production Contest are now available. All D. H. I. A. members with 10 cows or more who have completed at least one year of D. H. I. A. testing are .eligible. Entries will be judged by a county committee to select the most efficient entrant from each association in Frederick county.
