SYRACUSE HERALD AMERICAN, Sunday,Tree Lighting Slated forSaturdayTHE 35TH ANNUAL Community Christmas tree lighting will be held in Clinton Square at 10:30 A.M. Saturday morning and will be marked by the arrival of Santa Claus to greet his host of youthful followers.A giant mail box will be erected in the Square tomorrow afternoon to receive the thousands of letters from . children in this area who want, to mail their personal request directly to St. Nick.SANTA CLAUS will gather up the bundle of helpful letters during the tree-lighting program, and then will make the long trip back to the North Pole to prepare for his Christmas Eve visit to many homes around the world.The colorful Community Tree lighting program, first staged in •this area in 1915 in St. Mary’s Circle, will last approximately 45 minutes and will be conducted by the Syracuse Recreation Department in conjunction with the Parks Department which has recently completed construction of a sky-towering Yuletide tree in Clinton Square.Two choral groups will take part in the tree lighting program which will serve to usher in Christmas week.A CHORUS of 45 voices made upof Girl Scouts of Onondaga County will be directed by John V* Sackett, and the Assumption Junior Choir will be led by its director, John Fisher. Bernice Walser will serve as soloist for the Assumption Junior Choir. *The 35th annual Community Tree lighting program in Clinton Square , is expected to attract thousands of youngsters from the surrounding area to observe the arrival of Santa Claus, officially issuing in the Yuletide season.In addition to -the program,, of Christmas carols, the Recreation Department, will feature special games, a reading of “The Legend of the Community Christmas Tree,** and the actual lighting of the 45-foot evergreen.THE COLORFUL program wasfirst begun in this city in 1915 when the community gathered around the Christmas ■ tree, then located in St. Mary’s Circle.The City Parks Department, as it does today, fashioned the sky-reaching giant out of a group of smaller trees to give it the proper balance.In conjunction with various groupsin the city, the Recreation Department and the Parks Department staged -a pageant on Christmas Eve. The program was moved to Clinton Square in 1934, shortly after the erection of the statue of Columbus.The program was shifted to the Saturday prior to Christmas in 1946, and the theme was changed from a pageant to a colorful ceremony revolving around the arrival of Santa Claus to greet the horde of youngsters awaiting him.tion will hold a Christmas’party ;for children from 2 to 5 P.M. nextSunday in Foresters’ Hall, 33S N.
