He* had migrated lo the Illinois Territory prior to 1817 and taken up an original land grant northeast of the present site of Enfield. Mrs. William J. Sweeney. seeing the potential in White County, came* here for a visd loping that a chapter might he organized. Mrs. I.and advised Mrs. Swcetwy to call on Mrs. John G. Powell eif Carmi. She was greatly impressed by Mrs. Powell's e-harm anti dynamic personality, and gave her the appointment of Organizing Regent.Having been members of ttie DAR for some lime. Mrs. Powell. Mrs. W. I.. Williams of Cray-villi*. Mrs. Ellis M. Jones of Washington, I n d i a 11 a. Mrs. Claude* M. Jordan and Mrs. Clin Ion T. I.and. both of Enfie*lel. formed the* niiedews of the new chapter. Preliminary meetings were* hole! at the Robert Ready Williams house* where Mis. I Mrs. Clarence* Rice of Carmi was'1 he* first member of Wabash Chapter.The organization meeting was held June 18, 1930, at Mrs. Powell’s new home, the home now oee-upied by her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Knight Hale and Mr. j II tie*. A luncheon for nineteen i iiii*ml)i*rs and eleven guests prc-| ceded Hu* formal organization. The* Slate Regent, Mrs. Eli Dixsnn of Roseville, was present when Wabash Chapter DAR was formed with twenty-six charter members. The officers were Mrs. Suma Randolph Powell, Regent; Mrs. Maude Mmckctl Pinch. Vice-Regent; Miss Laura Stinnette.
