MusicLast Sunday marked the first of a series of concerts for the 1954-55 season given by the Northwest Symphony orchestra.The program opened with the overture to ‘The Secret of Suzanne” by Wolf-Ferrari.The selection next played by the Northwest Symphony was ashow-piece so well executed and brilliautiy performed that onecannot but believe that this organisation “has arrived. Anton Dvorak’s Symphony No. 5 “From the New World,” a favorite of concert-goers for many years was treated to a refreshing reading under the baton of Perry Crafton.Guest soloist, William Hector, a member of the violin section, of the Chicago Symphony, chose the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Mr. Hector’s style and beautiful tone lent itself to this famous and melodic concerto. • _* * iThe “Carmen” Suite gave wide scope for each section of the orchestra. It was a challenge well met by every member of the orchestra, and they are to be congratulated on the performance from the Prelude to the Finale, which ended all too soon.The last selection on the program, “Espana Rhapsody,” was played with fire and color which brought this inspired performance to a fitting close. One left the concert with a feeling of anticipation for the next performance given by this talented group of musicians.
