Peaks Island Is pleading: for pure water and more of it, basins its petition on the contention that the present supply is inadequate and that samples from a well submitted to Dr Evans. A conference before thePublic Utilities Commission Wednesdayresulted virtually in a decision that some improvement must be undertaken before next Summer.The Peaks Island Corporation furnishes water and gas for municipal and domestic consumption, complaints being more or less frequent relative to quality and quantity of each. This corporation has ‘been hard presed thlt;-past two or three years, has had to cut dividends and holders of these securities regard them as worth less than par.All sorts of difficulties have embarrassed the company, and now comes an imperative order—a statute enacted by the Legislature in its recent special session—for this corporation to improve the water service or dispose of its property to the Portland Water District, which is financially able to undertake the burden, disagreeable though that procedure may be to the trustees.
