EditorialJudicial bow ties, are they for real ?Having been a devotee of the bow tie for many years, it is pleasant to see that natty adjunct of male attire having a rebirth, For some reason, it seems to be favored particularly by members of the legal profession.Judge John Paul Stevens of Chicago, nominated by President Ford for the seat on the Supreme Court vacated by William 0. Douglas, and a man of conventional reputation, has been pictured wearing a bow tie.Attorney-General Edwin Levi is always shown wearing one, as is David Belin, former counsel to the Warren Commission. And Archibald Cox, former Special Prosecutor fired by President Nixon, is another bow tie wearer This is fine, and we welcome it. But we have some secretmisgivings which we think should be resolved about these and other notable gentlemen participatingin this renaissance.In brief, can they tie their own bow ties? Or do their shirt collars hide that sartorial abomination, a black rubber band and a metal clip?Would it detract from the judicial dignity of a Supreme Court justice if we knew that he was wearing a bow tie under false pretenses and that it merely w'as fastened with a mechanical contrivance? It would with us.Or worse, before these elegant looking gentlemen come forth in the morning, do they stand in front of a mirror and their wives tie their ties standing behind them, reaching over theirshoulders?This should be cleared up now to the satisfaction of all genuine bow tie wearers. Perhaps Senator Frank Church could look into this if he runs out of other things to investigate.
