Tim Carnes, drummer, and B.T., bass player, had played together before, but Carnes and Steve Katsikas, keyboards, 12 string guitar and saxophone player, had also been in a band together.“I met Tim first, Jon Christopher Ashley, rhythm and lead guitarist, said. “He knew B.T. and Steve. Jason Chandler, lead guitarist, called us in response to an ad he saw at Ben Jack’s music store in Fayetteville.All five sport different musical backgrounds. “I’m from alternative, Steve is from soul and R B, Jason is from heavy metal, B.T. is from blues and classic rock and Tim is from classic rock and blues,” Ashley said. “Like a picture put together with different parts, we are a Mosaic of sound, hence, our first album, the Color of Music.Ranging in age from early to late twenties, Mosaic doesn’t have aspecific style. “We aren’t categorized,” Ashley said. “I guess we could be called alternative, but we really don’t fit that category either.On their first album, Color of Music, the group did not hire a recording company: They did the work themselves.“We wanted to take the time and energy to produce a quality recording, Ashley said. This was started.”a community effort. Steve did the pre-production and production work, but all of us contributed our opinions about sound. We invested the time to get the sound and look that we wanted from our first album.”Most bands include only a few of their best songs for an album, but Color of Music has 12 of Mosaic’s favorite tracks of their original music.According to Ashley, Fayetteville needs to support the growth of the local music scene.“As Fayetteville grows, the music scene is going to grow too, Ashley said. “Like Athens, Ga., and Seattle, Wash., the community needs to start supporting the local music scene. A college radio station that played local music, would pique the interest of local businesses to advertise.
