Is SuicideW illiam O’Keefe, a pioneer theatrical manager and actor, known all over the northwest, shot himself shortly after midnight on the steps of the county jail, dying instantly. O'Keefe, who was 65 years of age and a bachelor, left a pathetic note on his person, declaring his efforts to givetip liquor had resulted in torture. He willed his effects to the county hospital.O’Keefe came to Helena more than30 years ago and managed stock companies in theaters here and elsewhere. He was a comedian of power. Of late years, he had been conducting a small bill posting business*It was a few hours after midnight that officials at the jail were aroused by two shots fired in rapid succession. They found O’Keefe lying upon the steps, dead. He had shot himself in the mouth and in the head with a .32 calibre Colt’s pistol. Across his breast lay a letter addressed “ Toi’the Officer Who Kinds Me.” He hadevidently laid upon the steps before pulling the trigger. The note read:“My money is in the postoffice. Certificates at 301 \. Heat tie. Don’tcall any of my friends. I am a disgrace to them. I have been tortured beyond endurance since I quit drinking November 19. Hive all the things in my room to the county hospital. 1 can’t endure this torture any longer.I burned my stomach up with whiskey. I can’t eat, sleep or drink.“WILL O'KEEFE.”Dr. Ellis A. Johnston, county coroner. reached the scene a few minutes after the tragedy and ordered the remains removed to the undertaking establishment of Herrmann and company. Dr. Johnston said early this morning that unless some development arose, there would be no inquest.So tar as is known, O’Keefe had no relatives in this section nor was he a member of anv fraternal trder.l
