MORE ANCIENT HISTORY.•lanitor Kainn. Mak**i a Curftou* DImcov-t*ry in the Court lloune Ha*enilt;‘iit.(ieorge Haines made a peculiar discovery Thursday in the court house basement. While groping around in the inner caverns and recesses he tumbled into a deep, yawning abyss, which he at lirst took to be an old well, hidden by a thin covering that had crumbled with age and fallen in.Measurement with a pole showed i the unknown pit to be seven feet deep, with a soft loose material in the bottom that the pole penetrated two or three feet further. The hole had the appearance of a gas well, only larger, and was perfectly round with a solid wall, which on investigation proved to bo hickory bark.Further inquiry developed that the mysterious hole was where a Democratic campaign pole was erected in 1860, long years before the court house was built. The timber had decayed and dropped to the bottom, leaving the hard, flinty bark aroundit intact. At that period the public square was low aud swampy and the pole had been cut ofl at the top of the ground before the lot was filled.
