Aug. 31,1987TODD CAUDLERock1roll returnsYT, with guitarist David Mennlkettl, put on a short but Intense show at City Auditorium.YT plays short but exciting setYT, Ace Frehley’s Comet and Faster Pussycat added up to a loud, strutting, posing triple bill at the old City Auditorium when rock n‘ roll returned to Colorado Springs.Rightfully, the show went to the headliners, YT. I saw this Bay Area band on the small Rainbow Music Hall stage a few years ago. What a difference a big stage can make. Dave Menni-ketti, Joey Alvarez and Phil Kennemore used every inch of the auditorium stage, darting from the drum riser to the edge of the crowd.Opening with “Open Fire,” the band blockbustered its way through a set that never lagged. Menniketti is an equally great guitarist and singer, and his fingers and voice were hot Wednesday night. He makes the job look easy. Alvarez, hair flung in front of his face, was like a package of dynamite, constantly throwing his guitar left to right.Unfortunately, YT’s set was too short. At the one-hour mark, they were saying their goodbyes, and returned for another two-song. 10-minute encore.Ace Frehley, who for years made a big name for himself with face paint and elevator shoes, has left his Kiss days behind to front his own group, Frehley’s Cotnet.As guitarist with Kiss, Frehley shone brightly in a band that was altogether too dull without the fireworks and makeup. Garnering a fair amount of radio airplay with Into the Night,” Frehley has brought himself back from the rock ’n’ roll abyss.Although his set Wednesday night didn’t prove him or his band to be musical geniuses, he pulled out some of the oF Kiss flair with a guitar that lit up and, during a rousing four-minute guitar solo, a guitar that spewed smoke, sending Frehley running from one side of the stage to the other as if it were on fire.The music? It was a bit on the monotonous side, whether the old Kiss classic, Cold Gin,” or something from his new record, Frehley’s Comet ” The song “Breakout” breathed life into an otherwise so-so set. Great guitar, rousing beat, thundering drums— just what one would expect his set to sound like.Faster Pussycat, one of those bands that goes as much on looks as on music, opened the show. These guys came on stage sporting lipstick and fingernail polish and about as much originality as day-old bread. I can't grasp the appeal of a band who’s members dress up in prissy costumes, prance around the stage and don’thave any decent music to back themselves up.Todd Caudle is the Gazette Telegraph's rock critic.
