A Slice Of HollywoodWe Americans have had a love affair with pizza for what now seems a long, long time. It only became popular after World War II when a returning GI opened the first pizza parlor, what is now Shakey’s. But because of this continuing love affair you’d think we invented it here. Consequently, there are a lot of self-proclaimed pizza connoisseurs running ground, trying all the different pizza palaces and commenting on the relative merits.Every one is different — different “family” recipes, ingredients, secret sauces, or special toppings. I found many that I liked and some I didn’t like. So I was a little skeptical about trying the new boy on the block when he hung out his shingle at Showbiz Pizza. I knew it was a chain, owned by the same conglomerate that owns Holiday Inn, and I've always had a prejudice against “chain” restaurants. The service is usually exemplary, but the food is never quite the same as a family operation. I was not a believer, but after due prodding from my wife and kids I agreed to try it.Walking in, I knew Showbiz was different. There were rows and rows of video games and rides to amuse andbaked. Showbiz has a nationwide policy of no youths under age 18 without an accompanying adult to avoid becoming another teen hangout. When the pizza arrived I was surprised, surprised just like when I opened my first can of Coors Light. The surprise was how good it tasted — lots of sauce spread over a bready crust with lots of cheese and olives heaped on.Entertainment was provided by the “Rock-Afire Explosion”, a group of robot animals operated by a computer program to simulate “life”. Every child in the room was enraptured by the larger than life creatures — Fatz, the gorilla, on the keyboards at center stage, a dog drummer, a bear on guitar, and Mitzi Mouse in her cheerleader uniform as lead vocalist. You can munch along to old favorites like “Little Sister”, the Beatles “Birthday”, or “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones.There are now two Showbiz Pizzasin town: 3143 W. Colorado and 5100placate the masses while their pizzasN. Academy. They are open every day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. So load the family in the station wagon and head on over — you’ll be surprised.
