Don’t worry — take a pillOrest news. It you crave chocolate there is now an experiment for a pill that you can take to curb theProgress is a good thing, I've always heard I've also heard that there can be too much of a good thing. 1 mean, when do we say enough is enough?11 would seem that there is a substitute or alternative for everything these days. The thing i*. a pill for chocolate may curb the urge — but do you gel the satisfaction of eating the chocolate’ Well at least you don’t have to live with the calories Of course. I’ve always wondered what else could they come up with and it seems that they do. m fact, find something new everyday Sometimes I think we come up with so much stuff that we end up defeating our own puipose. I think sometimes that we were better of! with the remedies of old Ofcourse. in the day that they were popular, they were probably thought of as crazy as well by some.Recently I started collecting some of the old remedies that people used to use to cure different thing* and found some veiy interesting things - a. well as some ere interesting stories Before I share some of them with you I'd like to share a piece ofhance at all. (advice If you gel the you should spend all or part of a day talking with some of the elders that you know They are increiUile people, and although we’d like to think otherwise, the knowledge that they have isn't going to be with us forever What you learn from them can be very valuable asset, or at the very least, enjoyable Some of the things that were shared with me were old cures, and while some of them may sound far fetched. 1 am assured that thrv work:WeVe ail heard of the seven year itch - yes. there is such a thing. To cure it you use a mix of sulphur and laid. For a sore throat you can boil the bark of a chetry tree.Ginseng, along with many known uses today, is also good for sores Another cure for sores is wilted beet leaves Gallic juice win get rid of rashes on the body — if you can stand the smell. For sprained ankles you can wet a rag in vinegar and keep it wet For the measles, you can boil the branch of a spicewood tree Red clover boiled in a cup of water can cure a cough. Another cough syrup can be made from lemon juice, four tablespoons ofbooey and a quarter cup of whiskey A spoonful in the morning and night will keep the cough in controlFor an upset stomach you can put a mint branch in tea. Some of the things I found were more common, like catnip tea helping a baby deep. Some were, no offense, kind of strange’ Like rubbing rabbit gut* on a baby * gums will keep them from ever hurting when the teeth come in.Some were Afferent, like putting sliced onion on a snake bite. All of them, through, arc a part of our hi* tory Perhaps some specifi-eally originated ri^hUiere in^thetucky. I know they sure ran teach us a kit of things about our past.It can be nice to sit and listen to an older person tell you how mem here of their family used these cures One lady told me how herfather in-law was a seventh son. That was quite a significance. Supposedly just by his birth order he could cure some diseases, such as diphtheria, or help a baby cut their teeth All that wa* necessary was blowing in the person’s mouthThis was so widely believed that people would travel for miles and miles to have this done What makes this even more an awesome event is that you must keep in mind thBt there weren’t cars back then and they were doing the traveling by foot or horse. There were many, many more things that I found - more than I could possibly fit into an article. Each of them was interesting, and each of them made me i ealire that there is a kit of our heritage worth holding on toSo perhaps finding a pill to cure chocolate cravings is not so strange when you put it into perspective I guess people have always dooe things to try and improve their health with whatever they had accessible to them I’d still rather have the candy bar.Gail Freeman is a WOJiams-burp restdenf whore columns ap-^ear^ Tuesdays in the Times-
