Lions prepare new parkWASHINGTON - Softball players using the Washington softball field next year will no longer be playing in a dust bowl. The Washington Lions Club has seen to thatDuring the past week, members of the club turned out to prepare and plant the oufield of the soft bell diamond which was started three years ago and put into use this past spring.The playing field is located on city property just north of the Washington City Cemetery and plans are that the complex eventually have four fields, including or.e on which regulation baseball can be played.With cooperation between the City of Washington, Washington Lions Club and the City of St. George, the diamond has become a reality.Begun three years ago, there has beer a lot of volunteer labor and sweat go into making the athletic Facility a reality. The Washington Lions volunteered to do most of the work if the city of Washington would approve project, ft has taken hundreds of hours of donated labor and equipment to bring in fill dirt, level it, build fences and light standards and finally plantgrass on the field.Washington City proved the land and paid for the mercury vapor lights and poles, which crews from St. George City helped to install. The city fathers also phid for the sprinkler system equipment, but the Lions furnished all the labor to install it.The lighting system consists of eight poles and a totfcl of the vapor mercury lights. A sufficient amount of lighting material is still available for another field as it is developed, according to one Lion Club spokesman.Although sanitary facilities at the ball park are a little primitive at present, it is planned that modem restrooms will be added when funds become available. Plans also call for the building, as soon as economically possible, of a concession stand and bleachers.According to lifetime Washington resident Frank Staheli, and a Washington Lion, it has been “a lot of hard work, but the Lions are proud of wbat we've done. We’re also grateful to the many people of the community who have donated Lime ana equipment to help in the building of the park.”
