New pilot Davis to make ,DONSHAFFER Record-Argus Sports WriterSTONEBORO We re going to change things up a little bit from thepast, but we are still going to em-pahsize basic, fundamental football, summarized first-year Lakeview High School football Coach Rernie Davis.Davis takes over the coaching reigns after veteran mentor Joe Sass stepped down following the 1985 campaign Davis was the 1985 offensive tine coach tor Thiel College“I have no complaints, Davis reported. “This is a great group to work with. There are a lot of good athletes on the team and they seem to learn quickly.Gone is the 6-2 defense previously employed by the Sailors. Davis has decided upon a 5-0 alignment to give the Sailors more defensive strength.Right now Rodney Wright and Kevin Watts are our two linebackers You would have to look hard to find a better nair than those two, Davis praisetfWright, a senior, has started at linebacker during the last two seasons, while Watts will move backoff the line, where he played the past two seasons.Tom Gander seems to have an edge over junior Jesse Umstead in a battle for the starting nose tackle position. The 6-2, 205-pound Gander has good size and has shown good speed Umstead. “ ... shorter and a stockv-built kid, probably about 190 pounds, according to Davis, will give the Sailors depthMark Armstrong. George Egger and Dave Pyle are battling for the two tackle spots, while Rav Van Dusen.
