Fair Enjoys a Good First Day; Country Music Sho w TonightVisitors and officials alike this morning were pleased with the Allen County Fair as its opening day became history.Entries of all types arc equal to former years and in some divisions are better and more numerous than in any local exposition in the past decade. .This is especially true of the flower show in the north end of the Little Theater. The displays are beautiful .and include a number of plants which are rather rare in this area.One which prompted many “ohs and ahs” today is a chenile plant with pinkish, caterpillar shaped blossoms 15 to 18 inches in length.The Dirt Diggers Garden Club has an attractive display in the lobby north of the Little Theater. The flowers and plants are changed each day to guarantee freshness. The theme for the show is “Rhythm With Flowers.”The midway was packed for the Hammond Shows last night and a goodly crowd attended the Home Talent contest in front of the grandstand.The winners in the under 14 year old group were Patricia Mosely, first, with her acrobatic dance; Peggy Sue Doussa, vocalist, second; Linda and Gloria Womelsdorf won third with a piano duet._ Sherri Mosely. who twirled her baton while bouncing on a pogo stick won top prize in teh older division; second went to Roger Henson and Helen Vaughn, who entered as* Roger and Katie and sang western songs; third place was won by the Fuil-O-Pep square dance team. In each division the prizes were $15, $10 and $5.Tonight's main entertainment feature is the Country Music show in front of the grandstand starting at 7:45 p. m. This will be followed by a dance at the National Guard Armory at 10.I Judging of flowers, poultry, do jmestie arts and other open classes was completed this morning. Livestock of all types, crops and similar divisions will continue this afternoon.The judging of 4-H booths, home economies entries and foods were finishec^yesterday afternoon. Sheep and hogs were judged this morning: 4-11 judfng contests also were staged. Dairybeef cattle and horses will be judged this afternoon.Winners announced so far:- Livestock judging: .Billy- KloLz back, Full-G-Pep, first with I at: points: Dale Donald, Willing Workers. second, J8( points: HettyJones, Square R, third with 182. The standings of the teams *had not been determined.The Prairie Del! 4-H booth entitled, “Keep Kansas Clean” won the championship in this division. Some 20 booths are entered. The winner urges motorists and picnickers to refrain from scattering their trash over the landscape and to place it in cans so it can be properly disposed of.The Gas City booth featuring a harvest scene won second.Winners in the following groups are listed in the order in which they placed:Home Improvements: CherylWalters, Gas City; Diana Mur-; row, City Slickers; Marita Setter. Fuil-O-Pop. Team entries: Full-O-Pep; Square B and City Slickers.Foods: Anna Hess, Full-O-Pep; Diana Murrow, City Slickers; Donna Dougherty. Team entries: Full-O-Pep: City Slickers and Willing. Workers.Clothing: Nancy Wolford, Full-O-Pep; Janice Tomlinson, Full-O-Pep; Virginia Works, Logan Pals. Team entries: Full-O-Pep; Square B and Prairie Rose.
