Indians ReplaceSwastika WithThunder Bird» 1Tama, la,—The Swastika has been replaced by the Thunder Bird as a good luck symbol of the Mesquakie Indians on their* reservation at Tama.Last Year the swastika attracted some comment. The Indians just laughed when people said they had joined Hitler, but with the situation in Europe more serious, the Indian chiefs decided to do something about it.In preparing for their annual Powwow the swastika was discarded on all signs, beadwork and pottery. Instead the Thunder Bird, historic among the original Americans as a bird of lightning and fire, was ordered displayed by the Indian chiefs.
