THE TERRIBLE WOW‘By W. V. Cushing, Portage, Wis.Back in the days of lumbering Paul And iiis mighty crew from Montreal,Tiie terrible wow and ins w:!y mate Were roaming around in the Badger state.Paul never knew of the terrible wow Where he came from, when and how.He was only told when he left the east Thai tne Badger wow was a fighting beast.Paul picked out some fighting nun The shortest one was ten foot ten.Next to him was Cockney Reed.And bisigest of all. the terrible Swede,The fightenest man from way back east Who wasn’t afraid of man or beast.Twas pictured out to the terrible Swede How a wow was built b Cockney Reed.He was built like a horse with a lion’s paw With can*.hook horns on his Sower Jaw.A hump cn his back with a dum dum plate Wh-re he tapped his tad :o call his mate.The end of his tail had a great big bailThat he whacked the plate when he wanted to call;A focusing eye at the top of his headThat he could change from green to red;Had a wirx-y main on his upper jaw And teeth os: his neck like a crosscut saw.He wh;«r.:ed bv day and barked at night His eye was red when he wanted to fight.At night he would throw his focusing eye.For miles and miles it would light the sky.When nights were clear he could see his prey One hundred and fifty miles away.Just before he made a jumpHe'd whack the plate with an awful thump.This to his mate was the mealtime sound That a herd of deer cr moose he’d found.A mile and a halt to every bounce.Then down on the herd with a mighty’ pounce.To see i! the :a!e nl the wow was trite Paul calied cut his mighty crew.Down on the Fox near Governor’s Bend They started a search from end to end.The moon was shining in the east,Twas just the night for a prowling beast.They thought they heard the dum dum plate So there they slopped to investigate.Sure enough, at Chippewa FallsThe wow was drumming out his calls.His eye was green, but it turned to red.Then Tim O'Toole spoke up and said:“Boys, you see. it's Patricks dayAnd he's showing the green hi a wo wish war ”“His eye was red I tal it to you;”Tb belter we mooch,” said Joe MaFrew.The Swede says: “Joe. you scary iocn can’t you see it's nothing but the moon?Then Joe and the Jew and Cockney Reed Took to the Umber and left tire Swede For they were convinced it was the beast They heard about away down east.Then he blinked his eye 3nd the skv got dark And the wow let out a terrible barkTo call his mate, had drummed his back And the ice on the Fox commenced to crack. The wow turned his eye from green to red.And the Swede remembered what Reed had said And made up his mind MaFrew was right;That the wow was a heck of a thing to fight.The wow then blinked and made a dash And the tallest of trees began to crai-h.It was too late now to start to run. ■And of no use to shoot his gun. \For. to get the wow. a gun n would take jWith 12-inch bore of Swedish make.So. he pulled the “snuse from off his hip And placed a charge on his lower hp.It was genuine Copenhagen snuffTlie wow- got a whiff and liked the stuff.Then he turned his eye to greenAnd the Swede thought, “now tts easily seenThat to start a fight would be of no use;I’ll get him with Copenhagen ‘snuse*The wow got close and soon walked up With his wilv mate and their little pup.The Swede made friends of the fighting '.yowl; Soused up again and stroked their brows.Then, when he saw what he did with “snuse”He ordered a ton for the animals’ use.And. no other kind would be good enough.Only genuine Copenhagen snuff.The terrible Swede did all things well;How he would do them you never could tell.The fightenest man from awav back east.Who wasn’t afraid of man or beast.lt;Copyright, 1935. by Walter V.
