Southeastern Ohio SketchesI—IBy Norris F. Schneider—Atwood's band was one of the famous musical organizations of Zanesville a century ago. Bauer's Band was a successor, and Merrick's band carried on the circus tradition that Atwood started.Atwooa came here with a cireus. A hundred years ago and later It was common for circuses to winter here. Several band were recruited in this city, Atwood is said to have married a Zanesville woman and lived here.In the tri-weekly Courier of April 9, 1847, Alonzo D. Atwood published the following announcement: '‘Instrumental music. The undersigned proposes to open in about ten days, if a class can be formed, a school for instrcution in instrumental music, in this place. He will teach the proper use of all brass instruments, the clarinet and the flute.. He will not only give instruction,but will aim to make his pupils good players. At the boarding house opposite the Presbyterian Church.
