It was for his daughter, Janis, that the hotel was named. At the time of its establishment, it represented a $225,000 structure, to which has been added large sumsin additional features of the hotel.Drilling for the weli to supply mineral water to the large bath house was begun June 18, 1926, and not stopped until the depth was 1,750 feet. This is as great a depth as any well in Michigan. „The heavy overhead and expenditures of the new hotel, with no clientele to draw upon until patronage had been established, proved almost too great an undertaking that spring, and the hotel was closed after two months. It continued a life of change of ownership and management until almost six years ago when A. Michaelson became the proprietor.Reputation WidespreadThe reputation of the hotel -is ahealth spa is now so widespread as to have attracted bathers fromLondon, England, Canada, California. Memphis. Tennessee, Texas, and Florida and nearer states. Last year 10,000 baths were given.Traveling guests from many points including New Zealand, have made the New Janis their temporary residence.In addition to the 52 hotel rooms and the expansive bath house, there is a Janis hotel barber shop and coffee shop. Fourteen regular employes service the hotel guests and 16 workers are employed in the bath house. Mineral baths, massages and electric therapy treatments are given. /Miss Skilly Greer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hxs leased the C Shop from Mr. Mirhelson for summer season and will return hesummer. .The Reid hotel, 262 Center street,is South Haven’s oldest hotel in operation. having housed guests for S$5years in its 60 rooms.Opened by Judson BaileyJudson Bailey first openedestablishment and it has passed through several hands to Harry Otto, proprietor for the past year and a half. Before Mr. Otto, Ra\mond Reid, well known South Haven figure, now residing in Grand Haven. was proprietor.Of the seven emoloyes, Jerry Me-*thehas been*nservice in the hotel longest. He has been day and night clerk during a period of six years.A year before the Janis hotel was erected, the late F. C. Webster built the Webster hotel, 203 Center street, designed primarily for transients.The hotel now belongs to the Webster estate of which Ward Webstar, local restauranteur, is administrator.There are 45 rooms in the 13 pear old building and nine em-jloyes man the establishment.Another of the older hotels still n operation is the Arlington hotel, 4Q5!£ Phoenix street, under the management of Mrs. Alice Stanley. Mrs. Stanley has operated therefor two years. — ■ *HOSNER VETERAN GARAGEMAN HERER. S. Hosner, employe of the Nif-fenegger Auto company, holds the honor position for long service in South Haven garages with a 20 year employment record.He is one of 18 employes in theNiffenegger sales and service.Percy M. Chad dock's record of 15 years with Decker-Moore, Inc., is not easily dismissed. Loren Stru-ble and Earl Fouts also claim distinction by virtue of service among the 10 employes there.Another record holder is Oden Lingle of the Myers-Hutchins garage where he has worked for 1 years.*Ludlow, Vt., (UP) — Leo Pluta and George ZienOwicz, both 11, must have set some sort of a record when they picked 318 four, five, six and seven-leaf clovers within six hours.
