acts because I had to go down in the (orchestra) pit and play between acts and didn’t have time to change. ’ ’Eventually, Alta and Joe ended up in Moberly, Missouri — halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis — at the Grand Theatre where many big vaudeville acts and other extravagant productions, including the road show of the Ziegfeld Follies, came.There they stayed for nine years, living with the other orchestra members and managers in upstairs apartments, until the theatre burned to the ground taking all of their possessionswith it.They worked in Manhattan, Kansas, until the Grand was rebuilt under the new management of Universal Studios. Alta and Joe brought the orchestra back to the Grand and spent a glorious year producing beautiful shows with wonderful music under the management of George Bromley.“Mr. Bromley was a good man,” Alta said. “He tried to get Joe and I to come to Hollywood (California) with him, but Joe said no.“Joe was very handsome, but he was shy. He had enough stuff to play the violin, but not enough to be a star.”Alta and Joe moved on to Leavenworth to the Hollywood Theatre managed by the five Dubinski Brothers.
