They traveled with the troupe, putting on shows all over Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.“We had an agent who was filling in as an actor one time. He had no class, really, and he was supposed to be playing a southern gentleman. He ad-libbed, ‘I ain’t got no blue blood,’ for one of his lines and the director really came down on him.“Well, he got mad and took all of the money — all of it — and left for Chicago. We didn’t have enough to even get back to Kansas City. So the director said to Joe and I, ‘You’ll have to go on stage so we can make enough to get back.’“So Joe and I were in the show.
