Why Not?One of the remarks we heard most often during and after the American Wind Symphony Orchestra’s concert Wednesday night was, “Why couldn't we have something like that barge permanently located here? II was a good question, and the more we think about it the more we ask ourself, “Why not? ”* * 0IT WOULD he a natural for the lake front, .which practically goes without saying. Nor would converting an old barge to a floating stage be ai?y great technical feat. While it rolght be expensive, we feel confident the money could be found.Once acquired, the potential for such a platform would be limitless. High school band concerts, Greenville Little Symphony per formances, Little Theater productions, louring shows, Easter sunrise sendees . , . The list is no shorter than our imagination. That this could also be built intoa prime attraction for tourists is obvious. But we don't think that .the 2500 poeple who saw and heard the orchestra would agree it need he justified on those grounds. We want it for ourselves. The city front levee is a readymade outdoor theater, on which folding chairs ride comfortably and pillows seem the natural seat. And as Conductor Robert Boudreau also commented, the river is the kind of asset for which most communities would trade anything. It deserves to be used for more than transportation, vital asthat function is.* * ♦THE ONLY hitch In the idea 5s finding a group of citizens willing to push it to completion, but this could be one lime when ordinary apathy is easily abandoned. This is no half-real scheme but a project which is bound to be accepted once completed. Alt that remains is for the eornmmunity to follow through. Why not?
