The vessel captain answered in the negative aud said he was bound for Escanaba. When informed of his danger he hurriedly changed his course. A serious catastrophe was thus happily averted. The tugs Gregory and Alert indulged in a little race last Wednesday on the lake off ■ the ship canal. The schooner Rainbow, out a few miles, signalled for a tug when a veritable “ tug of war” ensued between the two boats. A heavy sea was running at the time-which at intervals made a clean break over the gallant little Alert’s upper works and caused the water to flood the deck until the lines-man—Wm. Ritchie—stood up to his knees in it. Capt Jacobs secured the vessel’s “string,” nevertheless, and now himself and crew are more and more of the opinion that they have one of fasted and staunchest craft under them afloat on fresh water for her inches.'
