The pageant starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sep. 13 and winners in the Miss Mexican Heritage contest will receive scholarships; the queen will receive $750, $200 for the first runner-up and $100 for the second runner-up from the Sonny Ramirez Scholarship Fund.Contestants for the Mexican Heritage Pageant are Blanca Botello, Nina Canizales, Rachel Ochoa, Tanya Soto, Monica Vital and Lara Ybarra.Botello, daughter of Luis and Juanita Botello is 16 years old and a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School. She is active on the soccer team, a varsity cheerleader, a member of the Spanish Club, volunteers at Hughen and works at Casa Blanca. She plans to attend Lamar majoring in education. She will represent the state of Coanula.Canizales, daughter of John and Diana Canizales is 16 years old and a student at Nederland High School where she is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She has served on the student council and plays softball on the city league. She plans to attend Lamar University and the University of Texas to major in physical therapy.Ochoa, daughter of Rosendo and Angelina Ochoa is 18 years old and a graduate ofCANIZALESOCHOASOTOVITALYBARRAThomas Jefferson High School where she is active in the drama club and the Summit Program. She is a student at Lamar University majoring in physical therapy for children. She is employed in child care at the university. She will represent the state of Jalisco.Soto, daughter of Armando and Lucy Soto is 19-years-old and a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School where she was head twirler, active in the Gold and Maroon Band, the Concert and Symphonic Band, the Spanish Club, Video News Club and student congress representative. She is attending Lamar University majoring in mass communications. She is a volunteer intern at KJAC-TV. She will represent the state of Baja California.Vital, daughter of Gil and Estela Vital is16-years-old and is a student at Thomas Jefferson High School where she plays soccer and tennis. She is active in the Catholic Youth Organization at her church. She plans to attend college to major in nursing. She will represent the state of Jalisco.Y’barra, daughter of Mary Ellen Y’barra is 18-years-old and a student at Lamar University where she is majoring in pharmacy. She is employed at Walgreens Drug Store. She is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School where she was active in the Concert an/d Symphonic Band, jazz band, Swingster drill team, tennis team, softball team, Spanish Club. Bi-Phy-Chem Club and SADD Club. She will represent the state of Michoacan.Proceeds from the festival go to the Scholarship Funds as well as other community projects.
