2D NAPLES DAILY NEWSMon., Aug. 23, 1976fie!eoPnshtDear Abby:By Abigail Van BurenDEAR ABBY: I see in the news that American taxpayers are paying up to $26,000 annually to provide its elected officials with female companionship around the clock.I am a disabled veteran. I draw only $8,340 a year and can't afford a mistress, so I have to sleep with my own wife.Sign me...LACKING BENEFITSDEAR LACKING: Let’s hear it from a homemaker whohas another view of the news:DEAR ABBY: That buxom blonde Washington secretary who can t type or answer the phone but drew S14.000 a year for entertaining her boss has made my day!i am a housewife whose job doesn't pay a salary, but it’s comforting to know that I’m worth $14,000 a year just for entertaining my husband twice a week. When I add that to what I must be worth for cleaning, cooking, doing the laundry and raising the kids, it makes me feel terrificWORTH MILLIONSDEAR WORTH: And now a word from a secretary who works on the hill.*Readers Comment on D.C. Sex, SecretariesDEAR ABBY: I 'm a hard-working, well-paid, Washington secretary, hired to do office work, and that’s all I'm expected to do. I resent all those ladies-in-waiting” who have given us government gals a bad name. In self-defense I paid a dollar for a badge that says. I CAN TYPE!FOR THE RECORDDEAR ABBY: Should a dinner guest (whether it be a friend or relative) offer to help the hostess clear the table between courses and when dinner is finished?I am referring to homes where there are no paid domestic employees.BLUE ISLAND, ILLINOISDEAR BLUE: If it’s obvious that your hostess could use a little help, offer. But if she declines, take her at her word and don’t insist.DEAR ABBY: I have a friend who is 60 years old. She was married 10 years ago by the justice of the peace and now she wants a church wedding with all the trimmings. She’s having her four young nieces as bridesmaids, and her maid of honor is an old maid of 70 who was her childhood friend. The bride” is wearing a long white (!) gown and there’s to be a large reception in a rented hall.I say, getting married in church is fine, but at her age and after 10 years of marriage, she should have a quiet religious ceremony and a dinner afterward in someone’s home or in a nice restaurant. I also think a white gown is in poor taste.Everyone is laughing at her. What is your opinion?N.J. FRIENDDEAR FRIEND: I think it’s a beautiful idea, and I, for one, see nothing to laugh about. It’s her first religious ceremony, so why shouldn’t she have the kind of wedding she wants?DEAR ABBY: I 've heard of golf widows, fishing widows and baseball widows, but would you believe a dog widow? I’ve been married eight months and every Saturday and Sunday morning, my Harold grabs the morning papers and goes right for the lost and found section looking for lostpets. He checks off those that offer big rewards, then he jumps into his pickup truck and goes out hunting for the lost pets.So far he has located four lost dogs and collected $300 in rewards. That’9 an average of $37.50 a month. We both work, and 1 would rather have Harold home for some goodold-fashioned sleeping in on weekends than scouting for lost dogs.Any suggestions? DOG-GONEDDEAR D.G.: Offer Harold $35.00 a month to stay home.DEAR ABBY: I read in your column where someone said gentlemen used to prefer blondes, but today it seems that gentlemen prefer gentlemen. And you said, No. I think most gentlemen still prefer blondes, brunettes and redheads.Abby, I am greatly disappointed in you. Don't you realize that you have a lot of black readers who don’t happen to be blondes, redheads or brunettes?LOLLIE IN TULSADEAR LOLLIE: The letter to which you refer appeared in Ann Landers’ column, not mine. And Lollie, dear, please don’t be too hard on my twin sister because I have seen black women with beautiful red and even blonde hair. Of course, it’s not their natural color, but then, neither is mine.HONORED TO HAVE YOU — Two people who were delighted to greet George Cavender. center, to the University of Michigan Club luncheon were Bruce Green.president of the U of M. School of Medicine.A report on its results is to be published by the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday, but the Washington Post obtained a copy and published the findings in its Monday editions. The report is based on follow-ups of 1,891 women for an average of 12 years after they began taking estrogen.American doctors have been prescribing estrogen for about 5 to6 million middle-aged women to ease the pains of menopause.About 10 million younger women take estrogen in the form of birth-control pills.Breast cancer will be detected in 89,000 American women and will cause 33,000 others to die this year, the American Cancer Society estimates. The study turned up no reliable correlation between the length of time estrogen was used and the risk of breast cancer. For about the first 12 years after a woman began taking estrogen pills the likelihood that breast cancer would be detected if it was present was about the same for users and nonusers of estrogen, the study said. But after 15 or more years of estrogen use. the study found that the chances of breast cancer detection were two times normal, no matter how long during the period a woman had taken the drug. There was no conclusive evidence of how much of a risk was involved for those women who used estrogen for a very short length of time, the study said.... • • 'C* • r*r*-.*• • - .. .1 .Vi. * * * ' i m *• V *-lt; - - - - /v' r• ^ F . . + \ rt-.'r .» .-wt.* - -.’A;/-■V'-* . _ J* : * - - .*; w ,• -i*•: - ...Aj • •* -v -Oj ••.
