Slit f akrSection KlSaturday Morning, August 23,Insurance Cost Soaring For Sait Lake CountyCourt-awarded damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars are forcing Salt Lake County liability premiums higher and higher, commissioners were told,‘It used to be that a $25,000 award was (considered) high, Edward B. Moreton of the Fred A. Moreton Co. said, pointing to a main reason why the county’s auto liability insurance bill was jumping $45,620 to $210,620 for the next 12 months.Second YearThis is the second year of a threo-year premium given on a low bid last year, commissioners were told,Couldn’t the county rebid the coverage?Mr. Moreton said that’s possible but the new pre-mium would be based on last month's rate rather than the August, 1974, schedule his firm used for that bill.He cautioned commissioners to get ready for another major hike when the premium is due in mid-1976.Agrees to WorkWith that in mind, he agreed to work with County Auditor Gerald R, Hansen, purchasing agents and others to see how the county might trim its insurance bill.One of the most obvious ways? Mr. Hansen said, is to expand the county’s self-insurance program that now centers on collision coverage.
