Williams, Recalls History of Early Musical Organization; First Band Was In 1808.Harvey L. Williams, principal of the Granville schools, is the director of the high school band, shown above, which is the second organization of its kind in the history of the school. Mr Williams organized the present hand in1933, about 125 years after the first Granule band was organized. When the principal of the local high school organized this hand three years ago,the group consisted of less than 20 members. Today, through the efforts of Mr. Williams, the hand consists of a total membership of 40 pieces.The first high school hand was organized in 1915, Mr. Williams beingthe leader and director at that time. Due to lack of interest and lack of musical talent among the public school students, the organization was disbanded some three years later.Mr. Williams has had much experience as a member of a hand and as a leader of such an organization. TheMasonic band of Granville, organized in 1923, was under the leadership of Mr. Williams throughout the major part of its existence—until 1930 when the hand was discontinued.Reviewing th* history of Granvillebands, the first group of musicians assembled in this locality was in 1808—three years after the settlement of the village This band enlisted as a Regimental Band at the beginning of the War of 1812 Same of the instruments used by this group are preserved in the collections of the Granville Historical society.The second band in the history of Granville was organized in 1861 andboasted of a membership of 14 This was during the Civil War period and war songs were favorites of the group. This band made many appearances in the surrounding territory, traveling inan elaborately decorated band wagondrawn by horses. 1st many instance# the hand wagon was used as the hand platform during concerts.A hand known as the ‘Independent Band” was organized in 1880, continuing for a number of years. In 1906 Alfred Lee organized a local hand which lasted for nine years. During the nine-year existence of thi# grdup, Harvey Williams was one of the leaders. The hand was discontinued in 1915 and the same year Mr. Williams organized a group of musicians who were students in the public schools.
