Paul DoucetHIAFFREY” was last year’s “best seller.” When the story was first published in Harper’s Bazar as a serial it was acclaimed as the most absorbingly interesting -andhuman story ever written by an English author. The reputation was fully sustained when it appeared in book form. Eminent critics declared if it could be reproduced as a photoplay it would rank among the best ever shown. The story of “Jaffery” is too well known to need repetition. It is sufficient to say that every one of the many great situations have been faithfully reproduced. Among the most remarkable of the scenes are the meeting between Jaffery, Prescott and Liosha in the Balkan mountains; the discovery by Doria of her husband’s theft of the manuscript of his great novel; the emotional efforts of Jaffery to control himself at the wedding of Doria to Adrian; the tempest-tossed freighter upon which Jaffery and Liosha take their hare-brained trip; the hold of the ship when the cargo breaks loose and Liosha’s astonishment at the amazing antics of the unscrupulous Fendihook.* • •WRITES FOR SMITH.^ CAST of unusual excellence was selected for the film production. Practically every member is a star. When Mr. Locke wrote “Jaffery” he constantly had his class-mate and life-long friend C. Aubrey Smith in mind as his ideal of the leading character. When Mr. Locke agreed to make a motion picture scenario of his story he stipulated that no other actor could play the lead. His wishes, of course, were respected.Mr. Smith is a famous leading man. His services have been constantly in demand for parts that combine a man of gigantic stature and equally ; reat dramatic power. Just before jpearing in the Locke production was for two years leading man for Margaret Illington in “The Lie.” His most notable screen appearance was at the lead in “The Builder of Bridges,” “John Glady’s Honor” and “The Morals of Marcus.”• • 9MISS WOODRUFF IS PRAISED.JO ELEANOR WOODRUFF was entrusted the role of Doria, and by her splendid ability she makes the character stand out as clear as a cameo. Miss Woodruff, too, left the legitimate stage to take up screen playing. Her last appearance in the spoken drama was in “The Five Frankfurters.” In “Big JimItional merit who returned to the stage after completing her work in“Jaffery.” Her greatest previous work in pictures was in the spectacular drama “Life.”Doris Sawyer, the beautiful English actress, is Barbara. Before assuming this role she had just returned from South Africa where she appeared in an all-star production of “Jim the Penman.” In the film productions of “Tangled Fates” and “The Hand of Peril” she had leading parts.Ben Hendricks, famous creator ofOle Olson and Yon Yonson, is Fendihook; Eric Blind, a Frohman principal, is Hilary; Paul Doucet, leading man with Elsie Ferguson in “Margaret Schiller” and who played leads with Theda Bara and Martha Hedman, is Adrian, while Suasn is capitally acted by Little Claire Aillier.“Jaffery” will be presented to exhibitors to-day at 11 a. m. in the project'on room of the International Film Service, 207 South Wabash avenue. It will be seen for the first time by the general public September 5.• * •STAR HAS OWN COMPANY.JHE organization of individual film companies with famous stars as heads is the fashion of the moment. It is more than that, it is said, and may prove the solution of the ruin-ous-salary-to-film-stars problem. Marie Dressier is the latest to becomeGarrity,” “The Island of Surprise,’ “The Heights of Haggard,” “The Hero of Sumbarine D-2,” “Out of the Quagmire,” “West Winds” and “Britain of the Seventh” she scored her greatest successes.Liosha is capitally played by Florence Deshon, an actress of excep-her own boss. This means she is marked down as star, scenario editor, and stage director. The other incorporators are J. L. Dalton and William A. Brady.* • * m|TTHEL BARRYMORE has started work on another Metro picture.
