Among the many pleasant excursions up the Cedar this summer, we think we risk nothing in saying that none of them afforded more genuine pleasure and comfort than that of the LinnCounty Bar Association Saturday afternoon last. The members of the association, at areeent meeting, resolved upon this excursion for the benefit of themselves and their familes and friends, and in carrying out their programme fully performed everything that was expected of them, and more too. Shortly after 2 o’clock P. JL, the Khedive shoved from the landing, and the excursionists round themselves gliding up the river at a very pleasant rate of speed. Soon after starting, A, TL West, Esq., came to thefront and said;Ladies and Gentlemen; As chairman of the committee of arrangement, I have the pleasure of welcoming vou aboard and safely started on the excursion- With this the duty of the committee ends, and it is your duty to enjoy yourselves as best you can the remainder of the day* I have no speech to make, and am not goingto make one. reserving that privilegeGettitle.SinCALL’at:on best wh\Balley thine in thAllen } gains in ev shoe tradeto the chairman of the association,reenveM.u-LQaaEveryb restaurant meals servLarge children’s!TllEMEMB when you fresh and« or fancv lt;rPreach iu the Un next, morr ilia bv theBor 5a Avenue, cl cistern ar down, bal? 45-tfCamp A Brethren ^Otter Qree Services- i Christian j to join in IniK exc Cornet 15ev day evcni success, i The boat passed off are glad tc to the bo:Notice. celebrated will he sup orders to 1 can be fou any time c anybody \when he r it promptlThey 1 came in gcbringing V to the prii their sto WfitermelC big-hearfce olent EnO« want a toe right overcent.Col. Preston, who has, doubtless, a speech already cut and dry, and willnow deliver it.Col. Preston came forward in his customary diffident manner, his face suffused with blushes at being compelled to stand before so large a concourse of ladies, and said: ladies and Gentlemen of the Excursion and members the Bar Assocria^ tion: It is with much pleasure I, as chairman of the association, welcome you. The members of the bar are social beings, much as some of you mav question the statement, and have gotten up this excursion fox the purpose of cultivating their social qualities and getting better acquainted with one another and their friends. The generally received opinion is that lawyers, as a da3S, are unsocial, cold and heartless; but the opposite is the truth; that they are quarrelsome and unkind one towards another, and at swords’ points with the world generally. But such is not the case. True, most of their time is spent in settling the quarrels and difficulties of others, and, with the l'orce of example constantly before them, it would not seem strange if they were sour, morose and quarrelsome. But instead of this, they profit from the example set fore tliem-by the world outside of the profession, and instead of becoming like it, they become the most kind-hearted, peaceable and loving men in the world, as everybody knows who has had opportunities for studying and understanding the true inwardness of members Of the profession—Such opportunities, for example, as are afforded on an occasion of this kind. Our profession is an arduous one; Ouo or great perplexity and much care, and social occasions such as this are. necessary for relaxation, and it gives me much pleasure to be able to join the members of the Linn county bar and their and my friends on a social excursion like this, which promises so much genuine enjoyment. On behalf of the association I again welcome you all.We believe that is about what the colonel said. If he didn’t say just iu that style, lie did in “words to that effect” ”The ride up the river was of about two hours’ duration, and was spent in hearty and pleasant social intercourse. Each lady and gentleman on board seeming to consider himself and herself a committee of one to entertain everybody else.Arriving at the landing, some “took to the woods” to gather ferns and flowers, others scattered along the river bank to fish, others went boat riding, while a few' remained aboard the boat and enjoyed themselves in a quiet, social way.About. 0 o'clock the boat whistle gathered in the scattered crowd, which on getting aboard found a most inviting supper in waiting. It was none of your jammed up picnic conglomerates of pie and meat and sardines and sugar and cake and butter, but a feast which for variety and general excellence in the delicacies, luxuries and substantiate of life,is rarely excelled at a first-class Hotel. A cook stove aboard afforded the wives of the members of the association un opportunity to demonstrate what they could do in the culinary line; and they did it to perfection, so savory, so inviting and so substantial that even the corrugations in the chairman’s face spread out smoothlv as he cast a glance over the table The feast ended—for indeed it was a feast, not a ^lnnchr as the ladies called it—theboat was soon under way, and a pleasant ride down the Cedar, tinted with the mellow rays of the setting auu, brought the excursionists back to the city, each one feeling that for genuine enjoyment the excursion of the Linn County Bar Association was the most pleasant of the season. Boon after starting on the homeward trip the invited guest3 held a meeting in the after part of the boat, of which J. II. Catobum was chairman, and the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:Resolved, That our most hearty thanks are duo and are heresy tendered to the members of the Linn County Bar Association for the rare pleasure wo have enjoyed on this excursion.Resolved, That while wc give due credit to the committee of arrange-, meets fox the excellence of the pro- j gramme, ful! as much credit and ] ccedmg praise is due the ladies for the admir- joining able and most successful manner they mi. _ _ provided the luxuries and substantiate, and in this and many other ways contributed so munificently to the pleasures of the day.We could say much more of this pleasant affair than we have, but wc have said enough to show that thefirst social of the Linn County Bar Association was a success. We vote for more of the same kind.Died A Logan, Bs proprietoi Brooklyn*ness at th city, Sabb gan was t health, e where he Chicago f well, bub bended, came mm the hotel eian.
