Shortly after raid.night, a patrolman, who was temporarily hlhug Sergt- Campbell’s position, was standing at the corner of Bosser avenue and Sixth, saw one of the upper windows of tb* Beaubier lighted up. He hurried around to the house, but found it closed and was unable to arouse an3’ of the inmate-*. He, however, effected an entrance by the back way, and, rushing through the house, up the sev^ eral flights of stairs, speedily made his way to the room in A'hich he supposed the light to be. He burst opeu the door, and found the room filled with smoke, and the curtain of tfce window* ablaze. One of the boarders was f»£ asleep in his bed, having fallen asleep while reading, leaving the light burning. Had it not been for the vigilance of the patrolman there is not the least doubt that instead of writing a narrow escape we would now be penning the particulars of a dreadful second hotel holocaust. This should be a warning to the »any who indulge m the habit of reading after retiring, as it not unfrequentiy kaopens, slumber becomes master, lights are left burning, and, in many cases, with a dangerous remit-ituUe tr.eir south, ard sun.Mr. Smitl Plum Creek the rapid j country had t»oii of the lt;his farm at in the villi the travell: would alwa one now a IkLieut-, 15 r guest of tf cheer after lt;. asm had qui ly realized \that roomer meet so max departure through dor. for an iudefi feeling deep many true fr former spca flattering tc he deserveddteappontedoue preparei them what ; sent momer thrCe years : the pleasant tne service ? consequently He did not 1 like the cou oi duty and long before most of you Mr. Crisp v right and h I am sure w able mannei yon. study each c an 1 *-oper;
