Rveryooe these day* is complaining about tbe fishing and they have good reason. 1 doc’t know •ban t have seen it so stow. Oc-easloeally you hear of someone catch log a pretty good string but for the most part the average fisherman comes home skunked.1 took a trip over to the Mississippi river last Sunday with Doc Schrader and Mike Thornton. 1 have been on that river many times but I don't think I have ever seen fish aa hard to come by. When we finally wound up the day’s fishing I don't think we had over a dozen crappies and two bass to show for our efforts. I sort of pride myself In being able to catch fish under the most adverse conditions but that trip sure took me down a notch or two. There is one possibility that is affecting the fishing these days and that Is water temperature. Over the past 10 days to two weeks the surface temperature of the waters In the Mississippi has dropped 11 degrees. Whenever you have a situation like this you are bound to run into poor fishing conditions. Any drop In temperature will affect the Ashing no matter If It is even a mere coe or two degrees. However, once the fish get adjusted to this new condition they will again start to feed.• • • •Things are beginning to pick up Id the north country. 1 had word the other day that the walleye fishing In Ottertall lake is the best it has ever been at this time of the year. Maybe this is an indication of things to come all over Minnesota and Canada. 1 do know that the northern pike have begun to hit on MlUe Lac lake and when this happens It’s ncrt long until the walleyes follow suit. Several of the lakes in Canada have been providing The boys with some excellent northern pike fishing using one of our 5/8 ounce yellow and red Flutter bugs. This Is the time of the year when you should try for that big trophy northern. Most all of the real lunkers are taken in August and September.I'll be heading north in about a week for some fishing on Lake Vermillion and I hope that I can get into some 'of those big boys that Inhabit that lake. They are there, it's Just a matter of doing a little work for them. Last year we hooked at least three that would crack the 20 pound mark but we had the misfortune to lose every one. So I am hoping this year will be different. You know, I am still surprised at the number of occasional fishermen who come home with absolutely nothing on their stringer. You know, the old adage of a big hook for big fish went out of style 20 years ago.Too many fishermen have this Idea so fixed in their minds that they can't get out of the rut. Actually, with Just a little thought they would see the advantage of small books andlures. I have fished our Utile Fuzzy up north and have taken northern pike up to 12 endwalleyes In the eight pound class. The same holds true for the live bait fisherman. If he puts his minnow on a huge hook that rainnow-is immediately killed and as a result has no action. Cut down the size and put a smaller sinker on your line and watch that minnow go to work for you. It doesn’t take a big book to hold a big fish. You get a small book set in the Jaw of a big northern and you can hold him as easy as you would a crapple. Of course you will have a fight on your hands but that is what you go fishing for these days. So trim down your tackle and I am sure that your luck will improve 100 percent.» • • • •1 wonder if most of us know the extent of this fishing game. You always hear the same old thing each year, that baseball is the national sport. But Just for fun take a look at some of the comments and figures below and see If It won't sort of change your mind:In 1965 there were 33,470,000 Americans who hunted or fished. Now, the anglers dropped their lures into the water on 506 million fishing trips totaling 566 million days offishing. They traveled morethan 18,500,000,000 auto miles and spent more than three billion dollars on their favorite sport. Do you wonder why our lakes and streams are so crowded with anglers. Now take a good look at these figures again and then project your thoughts 20 years in the future. Is It any wonder conservationists are In a dither wondering what Is to become of this number one sport If something Isn't started right now In preparation for the future.Softball Tourney At Winlhrop SetSaturday another hl| in Iowa wit tangs golni Lyle LeLni after pracSaturday, are set a School At* coodittoolni and tee shi allowed We will give tlt; and a half before opesLeinbaug begin at 7 a session at schedule w with the b malning ti opens Augi Monday.Equip me?
