After the turnpike was huilt, the tavern was a stopover for such early VIPs as Sir William -Johnson, envoy of King George TV: and such 20th century ones as Harvard President Nathan M. •Pusey. Lowell Thomas, the late Sidney Greenstreet, Ted Mack, Olivia de Havilland and Raymond Massey, to mention a few.Lodowick Karner is believed to have come from Rhinebeck, -New York, along with other Dutchmen about 1T30 and settled on province lands south of the Indian reservation which the Indians in 1736 agreed to exchange ,for the township of Stoekbridge where a mission was established for them.However, Chief Konkapot, a noble man, stipulated that tbe •Dutchmen were not to be dispossessed of the land they had im-' •proved. Lodowick's son, Andrew Karner, had obtained a 99-year lease from the Indians in 1730 :and when Andrew's title was threatened, he reputedly married his sister, Mary, to John Van Guilder, an Indian with a •Dutch name.In 1762 the present tavern was erected over the cabin founda;-,tion and completely and accurately restored by Major Hugh Smiley • during the late 1920s. 2x has been ; conducted as a tavern since and is run by Jim and Mary Adie, a young Sheffield couple new to the business, who have made-a success of the ancient hostelry where, they are beginning their third season.Luncheons and dinners are served in the old cellar and in the terrace dining room, refin-kept gardens, lawns and pool.The Adles are most proud of /-their broiled plank steak for one which is 54.50 on the dinner. The tavern is very faithful about following broiling instructions and the Hi-pound steak will arrive just as ordered, surrounded by carrots, a broiled tomato topped with a mushroom and dusted with parmesan cheese, beets, pearl onions and string beans.
