A few evenings ago I met Blanche Ring and a group of her friends at the Algonquin. The great Ring was1 entertaining, and she*rounded up a.] goodly group with a generous sweep of her arm. She insisted that I join the company, and soon I was enjoying a privilege I’ve long wanted to ask for. It's been an ambition of mine to interview the veteran actress, but I’d never got around to it.For years I used to see Blanch leading her little dog out of the Algonquin, where she lived, 01* talking over old times with Proprietor Frank Case. Somehow. I never seemed to find an opportunity to interrupt gracefully.1Now, it’s no secret that Miss Ring is 64 years old, because it’s plainly stated in her biographical sketch in “Who’s Who.” And most of the country remembers her from the days of Nat Goodwin and Chauneey Olcott. writh whom she used to play, as well as for her work in movies and with Billy Rose dtiring the last few months.Retire? Not Blanche! She’s the working kind of stage person.I asked about the dog I used to see her leading. No, that one is dead, and Miss Ring is now living 111 a suburban retreat in Westchester county. But when she’s late in town or tired, or throwing a party, she still stays at the hotel./Her favorite dog of the moment is a mutt named Sadie Thompson.“She came to us in a furious downpour of ram, so I named her after the heroine of ‘Rain,’ ” Miss Ring explained. “She has had 32 puppies since, and only my best friends get free copies. I love Sadie.“I have a great big, lazy white cat, too, and she’s a darling. I call her Greta Garbo. No matter where you take her or how well she’s treated in strange or new places, she’s always wanting to go home.tiMiss Ring has a phenomenal memory as to theatrical performances. 1 asked her whether it was possible that I first saw her in vaudeville at the Princess theater in Wichita, about '11 to 12. No, she had never played vaudeville in Wichita. Omaha or *St. Paul, then? Yes, certainly, she had played vaudeville at the Orpheums of both towns. She recited all the appearances she had ever made in the. three towns, specifying that in Wichita she had acted in “When Claudia Smiles.”I forgot to ask whether she ever played in a silent filming of Tolstoy’s “Resurrection.” I can’t get over the impression that I once saw either Blanche or her younger sis-‘ ter, Frances in the star role of that picture, but I find no mention of it 1 in the theatrical records of the sisters.4:004 054.154 MO4.455:005.155 30 5 45 6:006106.256.30 7:00 715 7*J0 8:008 15 a.30 0:009 159.30 10:0010.1510:3010:3510 45 11:006:30 7-00 7.307'407:457 55 8:008 30 8.43WOO9 05 9.159 30 9 45 10:00 10 05 10.30 10'4511.15
