Terrible Paul From Montreal(By W. V* Cushing, Portage, Wis.)In thirteen hundred and fifty-eight.When logs were large in the Badger state,A lumberjack whose name was Paide in with a crew from Montreal;Landed somewhere north of the Fox With all his baggage and “Babe the ox.Felled a tree and the mark where it layPilled up with water and made Green bay.Old Doc Dekora said “Ugh! Be gosh Make heap big water for Chief Oshkosh.Then Oshkosh say “How much you take Make great big deep Winnebago lake?Right at Neenah Paul tied the ox Where he lay down had widened the Fox.The water then ran all aroundWhere he left his print on the muddy ground.Then he switched his tail to swat the flies And throwed some mud over Illinois.With his tail to the north gave another swish And made all the lakes around Manitowish.Nest morning Oshkosh was up at daybreak And saw big heap Winnebago lake.For this favor Oshkosh so grateful felt He presented Big Paul with a wampum belt,A big canoe and a pipe of peace And on the land a perpetual lease.While Babe was browsing he ate all the hay From Menomonee Falls to Chequamegon bay.He grazed his way north where the climate was cool And drank all the water there was in the Brule.* Near Soicn Springs he lay in the mud.Puffed and blowed and chewed his cud.Pawed out a hole and rolled his eyes And the Saint Croix river began to rise.Near Governor’s bend down on the Ftox Paul went out to call the ox.Babe was up near Araicon falls.Raised his head and answered his calls.Hoisted his tail, humped his back And over the timber for Fond du Lac;Kicked up his heels and throwed the clay That made the isles near chequamegon bay.Every jump the ox would take.He left a track that made a lake.They hitched old Babe to a heavy loadAnd dragged it along on a muddy road. iNear West De Pere they mired the ox jWhich caused the water to rise ia the Fox.Then between Portage and Green Bay Heck was a poppm' every way.Old Chief Oshkosh he took to a tree And told Dekora “Go head, puckagee.“Tell pale face Paul to leave some land 1“For Menominee and Winnehago band “ jThey then unhitched from the heavy load,Paul gave him a prod with his driver's goad. j The ex jumped out of the tnirey slush, 1Then the water let go with a mighty rush, ,Leveled the hills and moved the rocks jAnd made the valleys of Wolf and Fox.You can track ike ox todayFrom Puekaaay lake to Chequamegon bayUp around the northern halfYou will see his tracks when a little calf.Where*, er he stepped or wherever he lay He made a lake, a river or bay.The Wolf. £*. Croix, Chippewa. Fox All get their start from Babe tire ox.Temble Paul and the Russian Jew,Don MacShane and Mort Mai re w, JTim O'Toole and Cockney Reed.Joe the Cook and the Terrible Swede Started to build a shed for the ox That run from the Flambeau down to the Fox. “Now the best of trees is what we'll fallWas the order given by Terrible Paul.The Terrible Swede went on ahaid And marked the trees to build the shed.From every tree he took a chip.That was ten by ten, with his finger tip.Finally the water got low m the Fox And they had no place to water the ox Then the Swede and the Russian Jew Dug a deep hole near Baraboo.Piled the dirt and laid the rocksAnd switched the Wisconsin east to the Fox,Hie Swede had made them a diving bell To protect them from the heat of hell.When it got so hot they commenced to bake They came up and named it Devil's lake..lit(Copyright. 1935. by Walter V.
