frights Outnse Filmiy JACK CUftTlSCagey Alfred Hitchcock has fnovie audiences right where he wants them in “Psycho”—righton the edge of their seats,The suspense film started yesterday at both the Paramount Theater aild the Indian Drive-In.Starting with the opening panoramic view of the Phoenix sky Hue (portions were filmed here last spring), right on through to art “ending to ertd ail endings,” it’s a masterful mixing of the usual Hitchcock skill; good casting represented by Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, Tony Perkins, and John Gavin; crhck-erjack work by the cameramen; and a compelling story.Winsome Janet Leigh has the featured role of Marion Crane,a trusted sec-r e t a r y who shouldn’t b e.She neatly absconds with $40,000 of her bosses’ money that he didn’t exactly Intend to be a Christmas b o tt u s.Motive is to rendezvous with her secret lover (John Gavin) so they can live free from financial worries, and only have the law to contend with.Stopping at a roadside motel, manned by twitchy Tony Perkins, -is her downfall. What happens there involves a shower curtain and a 6-inch steak knife that isn’t used for what it was intended.CURTIShill in back of the motel holds the weird solutions to the film’s many mysteries, and viewers have to wait for them until the final minute.Then it even takes a competent medical authority to'wipe^the confusion from your mind, Hitchcock films, such as “Psycho,” are great entertainment.
