As the Titan IIs are they are being deactivated and that dismantled, the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society is hoping that a National Historic Site declaration can be obtained for one of them. We’d like to see that done with one of the silos close by. There are several near Highway 65 that would be advantageous from several standpoints. They are on a “tourist” highway, near interchange access to Interchange 40, a major interstate freeway through Arkansas, centrally located in the state, and of course in an area that is attractive and representative of the landscape and people of Arkansas.During negotiations with the Russians that led to ratification of the SALT I agreement, a provision was that as the missiles were deactivated the silos would be filled and thus rendered inoperable, and flyovers by observers could confirm that. So there are complications involved in keeping one intact, with a real but deactivated missile or perhaps a mockup in place. But there is no reason at this point to expect that the difficulties cannot be resolved, if we really want to do so.We think the museum idea is a good one — Log Cabin Democrat, Conway
