(Republic Photo by Raymond)By JOE STEWART • CoHege educators fill their summer vacations with some unusual activities, but few get farther lt;ff-fcrail than Calvin Israel and Don Finhey.Israel is professor of Eng* Iish, an authority on the literature of Herman Melville, a product of New York City sidewalks and a practicing poet.He is also the tall, tanned man in boots and Stetson hat one can see wrangling horses at Mitchell's Frontier Village.Don Pinhey, for five seasons, was a hard driving member of the Rough Riders, pro football team at Ottawa, Canada, He is head football coach at Dakota Wesleyan University. How come the professor in the corral? It’s a long story.Coach Pinhey’s natal state is the home of Goodyear and Firestone — Ohio. For him it is a first-time exposure to saddles and cinches, lie says staying aboard a South Dakota bronco is a gentler pastime than ear ningfour All-Canadian awards and captaining a professional football team.Professor Israel, on the other hand, has had previous experience with horses and the west— the western part of Long Island, that is. He once operated a riding academy at Forest Hills. He has a damaged arm to show for his riding days in New York — no scars so far from Mitchell. !How does an expert in the rea-j faring fiction of Melville .like; work with horses? He quotes another poet: “I think I could turn and live with animals they are so placid and self-contained.”The line is from Walt. Whitman's, “Song of Myself’.Both Israel and Pinhey are working for Bob Cravens of Gann Valley who operates a trait ide and a Shetland pony concession at Frontier Village.United Fund UrgesiOne Drive’ Only(EDITORS NOTE: Ibis is a -first la a series of articles to better acquaint the citizens of Mitchell with the newly organized Mitchell United Fund, its goals and its meanings.)squently, the total budget represents a completely realistic pie*Am TnBy MRS. LEE BARON Many years ago when the Red Feather Agencies, or Community Chests as we knew them, were organized, the meaning differed greatly from agency operation and fund drives as we know them today. In those days, Red Feather meant help to the indigent and those unable to help t hem-selves. Today, agency work is still directed towards t h ose who cannot help themselves but it takes the burden off ihe individual for health d r i res and community projects which have bbcome too expensive for individuals and groups of individuals to maintain ^and perpetuate. The tremendous strides in medical science' and in the care and treatment of sick or indigent people has been, in large pari, due to ihe fact that sums of money have been raised by a whole community going toge t h er and supporting the drive. The United Fund grew up immediately after the Second W o rid War. It grew largely through necessity because people in a community could not, or would not support all fund drives and each was . worthy in its • own right.United Funds have been °x-.tremely successful throughout the country. The business men and working people, both professional and non-professional, liked t h e idea of' giving “ONCE’ for all needs. The “ONE DRIVE” saved on volunteer strength, on admin-ture of funds needed to carry through- an entire fiscal year of operations or financial commitments. The United Fund Drive is a reasonable, practical approach t o mass giving and should sei*ve this community well. It will be successful because you, the giver, recognize its merits and will give“Once for All.”Hurley Girl's Essay Gets National HankingCENTERVILLE U! - An essay that won state honors for Carol Rayburn of Hurley has now been given a national ranking, headquarters here for South Dakota Flying Farmers and ranchers has been advised.Miss Rayburn’s ranking is one of the top four nationally.
