WANT A SAVANNAH CAPTAIN.8avanuah and New York Shippers Aakfor Cupt. Fleetwood.A petition, signed by 124 of tlie leading merchant* and shippers of Savannah and 23 of the largest patrons of the Ocean steamship company’s steamships in New York, was presented yesterday to Gsn. E. P. Alexander, president of the Central railroad and Ocean steamship system, asking that Savannah he represented i:\ toe list of commanders commanding steamers plying between Savannah and New Y rk, and soliciting the nppointmontof Capt. Thomas M. Fleetwood. The petition reads as follows:Savannah, Ga., Aug. 11, 1S89. Gen. K. P. Alexander:I)kar Sir—In view of the fact that additional steamers are being built for the purpose of plying between tliis porr and rhe port of New York we the undersigned citizens and merchants of this citv respect full*' petition that Savannah be represented in the fist of commanders of the vessels of the Ocean steamship company of Savannah; and wo earnestly ask that (‘apt. Thomas M. Fleetwood be appointed, satisfied aswe are that, from education and experience, he is eminently qualified tor the position.Appended to the j*titiou is an extract from a letter from P, E. Levre, late superintendent of the Ocean steamship company, t» Capt.. Fleetwood, datel New York, March 25, 1881, which says:Now that those intimate relations which so long existed are severed, I take this opportunity to express the high appreciation 1 entertain for your ability as a commander of a first class IMisRcnger steamship, and a gentleman, and your deportment and success a* master of the steamship Savannah, under my supervision, oortainly justifies me in this expression.
