unfair tactics of southern Federal judges. Representative Fiorello Ilt;a Guardia of New York announced his candidacy for Mayor ol New York City in a recent speech before several hundred colored voters in Harlem. In his speech Fa Guardia referred t( the Federal judges, from the Southland a? row up here.on a junket.”The New York representative, who, it if saui has adopted the role of “nominee eieeU' is pressing his campaign with much defermined vigor.« la Guardia. who apparently is widelj kpp'vn and liked by black New Yorkers, was. according to dispatches, roundly applauded ant) cheered throughout the entire speech.* That his statements meet with unanimous approval on the part of the large number of his hearers was proven when at the conclusion of his talk La Guardia mayoraltj cafdidacy was endorsed by the colored voter® through a formal resolution.* In his Harlem address La Gaurdia com planed very bitterly and with telling effect against the action of Federal Judge John E. M{rtineaa, of Arkansas, who criticized a jury in New York not very long ago because that body failed to convict a black man ol a flquor law violation charge. In a letter to Chief Justice Taft, La Gimrdia, very rightly asked that “these for* ei£h judges who don’t understand New Y#rk and who attempt to mete out justice according to the color of a man’s skin, be kqpt out of New York.”* We may add while dealing with the subject, that not only should such dispenses be kept out of New York, they should in*inlt;erest to the nation’s welfare, be kept oiff of all courts.Judges of the type referred to by La Guardia. are not only a distructive liability. btA a serious menace to desired peace and h^mony. We heartily agree with the New Yirk representative there is no place in the mirth for Arkansas iudires.UNITING THE METHODISM -•-The proposed union between the A. M. E. and V. M. E. Zion churches which was started in a con erence here. January 5, 1927. is progressing. Dr. iohn R. Hawkins has sent out the “Declaration of Principles as adopted by a joint committee in Pittsburgh in June. 1927, and subsequently by the Jeneral conferences of the two denominations in 928. If the union is voted upon favorably, the wo churches will be known as “The United Metho-list Episcopal Church/* and the next General con erence will be held under the new name. There will be no cutting down the number of ishops. The United M. E. church is to have 30 epis-opal districts, which is the total number of bish-ps of the two uniting denominations. This merger of these two denominations will nean much to our gorup economically as well as re Igiously and educationally. The overlapping of pre-.Iding elders and the maintenance of small schools ind small local churches can be eliminated. A larg-ir and stronger organisation should result.
