Attendance Sunday was between 5,000 and 6,000,compared to 9,000 Saturday.Sunday’s festivities were expected to draw larger crowds.Asked if the event was considered a success, McPhaul said, “At this point, yes.” He anticipates there will be a Family Fest next summer.By Jennie TunkieiczStaff WriterSimmons Island was more like a winter wonderland than a tropical paradise Sunday when unseasonably cold temperatures blew in.“What a splendid lot you all are in your overcoats,” Peter Noone, formerly of Herman’s Hermits, told Sunday’s Family Fest crowd.Noone took the blame for the cool winds.‘‘I’m from England and they sent the weather over with me on the plane,” he said.Noone, backed by a Kenosha band, the Convertibles, warmed up the crowd with songs like “Henry the VIII,” and “Something Good.” He can be seen on cable channel VH-l’s “My Generation” Monday through Friday at 6:30 p.m.Chicago radio personalities Steve Dahl and Garry Meier brought the sun with them at 4:30 p.m., which helped five men and four women shed coats and clothes for a swimsuit contest judged by the afternoon team on WLUP AM 1000.Hundreds of local “cheeseheads,” Dahl’s pet name for Wisconsinites, lined up for autographs from Dahl and Meier. Even Mayor Patrick Moran had his picture taken with them.“The Mayor claims we helped him get elected,” Meier said onstage.“I think it’s only because we made so much out of the‘spearchucker’ thing,” Dahl said, referring to former Mayor Eugene Dorff’s introduction of Jesse Jackson in February 1988. Tape of the introduction still gets frequent air play at the Chicago station.“It’s a beautiful lakeshore you people have put together. It’sThe sun came out for Steve Dahlreally inspiring. This is valuable lakeshore property, “ Dahl saidsatirically, observing the abandoned Chrysler Lakefront Plant.“What we need here is a developer,” he added, mimicking Dorff’s infamous faux pas.“You should be happy there’san off ramp on the expressway,” said Dahl.Few took offense at Dahl andMeier’s jeers at Kenosha.Mike Tatroe, 35, 8430 14th Ave., and Hope Beix, 19, Milwaukee, won the swimsuit contest.Dahl and Meier’s radio brother Kevin Matthews, as “Ed Zeppelin,” rocked thousands Saturday night at Family Fest.Matthews and his multi-personalities are heard middays on WLUP AM 1000.His Eddy character is a loving parody of WGN’s well-fed Ed Schwartz.Songs performed by the Ed Zeppelin group all emphasize food.
