I nlike Bowie s own stage productions, the Nicholas Roeg film lacks any dynamic visuals or an impressive musical scoreCandy Clark gets the dubious n?qogni*tion of being cast in thebest role She portrays a drunken bellhop who gives the ahfcn Bowie a bloody nose, becomes his mistress and grows old without grace.This movie is strictly for Bowie fans. Though “The Man Who Fell to Earth” is adapted from the hook by Walter Tevis. it almost appears to be a thirdperson autobiographical at tempt by Bowie.The Englishman plays a traveler who lands in the de sert and takes on a human disguise. In a short time, he becomes one of the richest and most powerful men in the countryHalfway through the movie, he returns to his starting point in the desert and becomes analcoholic Howard Hughes-type recluse. Things could have been more exciting H he had just stayed there building sandcastles.Through the weak character he portrays, it is difficult to tell whether Bowie's planned act ing career will gain him the great acclaim his musical talents have given him. For thismovie, he perfected the art of grimacing. This talent will be passed on to most who witnessthe film.It has been reported that Bowie's next venture will he a movie musical of his album “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars One can only hope that he can portray hispast better than this surrealis tic look into his future.
